Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono held a bilateral meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister and Expatriate Affairs Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin on the sidelines of the High-Level Segment of the 61st UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to a statement on the Indonesian Foreign Ministry’s official website, the meeting took place on Monday (23 February 2026). The meeting was regarded as a strategic moment to exchange views on developments in the Palestinian peace process and to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s full support for the Palestinian people’s struggle. He stated that Indonesia is prepared to play a more substantive role in advancing a just and sustainable peace, including through the Board of Peace and the International Stabilisation Force (ISF).

Sugiono also welcomed the establishment of a Liaison Office by the Palestinian Authority to strengthen coordination with the Board of Peace.

For her part, Varsen Aghabekian Shahin expressed particular appreciation for Indonesia’s consistently sustained political efforts in championing Palestinian interests. She also conveyed gratitude for the humanitarian assistance Indonesia has provided to the Palestinian people.

Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that Indonesia would work hard to ensure the transition process aligns with the interests of the Palestinian people and the principles of international law. Indonesia affirmed its commitment to continuing its contribution to maintaining the ceasefire and advancing a credible political process towards a Two-State Solution.

“The primary focus of the Indonesian contingent is civilian protection and humanitarian support,” Sugiono said regarding Indonesia’s planned troop contribution to the ISF.

In closing the meeting, Sugiono stated that Indonesia would continue to utilise various international forums to rally support for Palestine.

Indonesia also plans to hold a Special Session on Palestine in Jakarta on 15 April 2026 on the margins of the D-8 Summit. The event is considered part of efforts to strengthen international solidarity and support.

Sugiono also expressed his hope to welcome the Palestinian Foreign Minister on a visit to Jakarta in the near future.
