Foreign Minister Sugiono Calls for BRICS to Actively Safeguard Global Peace
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono, at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, India, on Thursday (14/5), called on BRICS, as a rising force in the Global South, to play an active role in safeguarding global peace and stability.
“As a rising power in the Global South, BRICS holds the position and responsibility to take a more active role in maintaining peace and preserving the rules that underpin global stability,” said Foreign Minister Sugiono, as quoted from an official statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
The Foreign Minister emphasised that BRICS’s greatest value lies in strengthening the voice of developing countries in shaping the future global order. He reminded BRICS to always uphold international law in a fair, consistent manner without double standards, as no country is above the law.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono specifically raised the issue of the deaths of four Indonesian peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL (the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) and called for full accountability from those responsible.
Indonesia affirmed that the safety of UN peacekeeping personnel is a principle that must not be compromised.
Furthermore, Sugiono stressed the importance of reforming global governance to address current challenges, including reforming the world trade system to make it inclusive, open, and non-discriminatory, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) as the primary foundation.
In line with India’s chairmanship theme, Indonesia welcomes the strengthening of the New Development Bank (NDB) and affirms that it is completing internal processes to join.
This year’s BRICS is being held under India’s chairmanship with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. 2026 will be Indonesia’s second year as a BRICS member, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of BRICS’s formation in 2006.
In the future, Indonesia can utilise the BRICS forum to continue strengthening collaboration in several strategic sectors, including the economy, climate change, energy, health, and global governance reform.
Indonesia’s membership in BRICS is expected to provide benefits and concrete cooperation for Indonesia, given that BRICS represents 28-30% of total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 45% of the world’s population.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is the main BRICS forum at the Foreign Ministers’ level and is part of the lead-up to the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for 12-13 September 2026 in New Delhi, India.
