Foreign Minister Reveals Risk of US-Israel–Iran War: Large-Scale Escalation Involving Many Countries
Jakarta – Foreign Minister Sugiono warned that there is a risk of escalation involving more countries after the United States and Israel attacked Iran. ‘The worst-case risk is an escalation that is bigger and involves more countries; that is the risk,’ he said in the Senayan area of Jakarta on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. He added that the Indonesian government regrets the breakdown of talks between Iran and the United States that culminated in the US-Israel attack on Iran. He stressed that Indonesia hopes the conflict in the Middle East will de-escalate soon. ‘We want de-escalation. Then the situation subsides, right? But we reiterate the importance of all countries respecting the principles of sovereignty and the territorial integrity of other states,’ he said. Regarding the Iran-US-Israel conflict, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has also offered to act as mediator if the conflicting parties are willing. In essence, Sugiono said, the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter must continue to be respected. It is known that Israel was the first party to confirm that it had officially attacked Iran on Saturday morning (28 February 2026) local time. Shortly thereafter, US President Donald Trump officially announced that the United States had joined Israel in attacking Iran. Iran then retaliated by launching missiles at locations linked to the US military operation. Some US air bases struck include Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait, Al-Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, and the Fifth Fleet Headquarters in Bahrain.
