Foreign Minister: Indonesia Supports All Efforts for Peace and Stability in Myanmar
JAKARTA - Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia Sugiono has emphasised that Indonesia supports every effort that brings peace and political stability to Myanmar.
“The main point is that all efforts bringing peace and political stability in Myanmar, carried out by Myanmar’s internals themselves, we support,” Sugiono said in a brief interview in Jakarta on Thursday (23/4/2026).
According to Sugiono, Indonesia views elections in Myanmar as acceptable if they can promote peace, ceasefires, the implementation of the five-point consensus, and are conducted inclusively for all Myanmar society.
If the new Myanmar government is recognised inclusively by the Myanmar people and can bring peace as well as resolve domestic issues, Sugiono said, then it must be respected.
He also emphasised that in principle, Indonesia supports every internal effort by Myanmar aimed at creating political stability and peace.
Regarding the possibility of the new Myanmar leader attending the ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, Sugiono said the Philippines is still monitoring developments and progress in the situation. A joint decision will be taken through consensus among ASEAN countries, Sugiono stated.
Min Aung Hlaing won the parliamentary vote on 3 April 2026, securing 429 out of a total of 500 available votes.
Myanmar’s first elections since 2020 were held in three stages from December 2025 to January 2026, after nearly five years of military government under a state of emergency imposed due to national security threats in February 2021.
The elections were won by the Union Solidarity and Development Party—which previously led Myanmar’s government from 2011 to 2015—with senior former general Min Aung Hlaing as the elected presidential candidate.
