Paris (ANTARA) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday (24/2) accepted the resignation of Laurence des Cars, Director of the Louvre Museum, according to a statement released by the Elysee Palace.

According to the statement, Macron accepted des Cars’ resignation as an act of responsibility at a time when the world’s largest museum needs calm and a strong new impetus to successfully complete its security and modernisation projects.

In recent months, the Louvre Museum has faced increasing challenges. Last October, four suspects stole jewellery worth around 88 million euros (1 euro is equivalent to Rp19,824) or about 103 million US dollars.

At the end of November, a water leak damaged hundreds of books in the museum’s Egyptology library. In addition, repeated strikes have also caused the museum to close periodically.
