Concrete steps to mitigate disasters are continuing in the Batang Aia Dingin River area, Padang City. In order to prevent the increasingly worrying erosion of the riverbanks during periods of high rainfall, the installation of gabion walls to reinforce the banks began on Tuesday (24/2).

The representative of PT Nindya Karya, Novriansyah, as the implementing party for the gabion wall installation, explained that this construction is a rapid response to the damage to infrastructure caused by the recent flood disaster.

In his explanation at the location, Novriansyah detailed the ongoing work, stating that the gabion wall installation is planned to span 350 meters along the riverbank.

“This location has previously been severely eroded by water. Emergency efforts in the form of filling embankments with a width of 5 to 6 meters were previously carried out, but were again swept away by the river current. Therefore, the use of gabions was chosen as a permanent solution because soil filling alone has proven unable to withstand the erosive force of the river,” he said.

The construction of the gabion wall, which has begun, is targeted to have a short completion period. The implementing party is optimistic that this protective infrastructure will be able to function optimally in the near future.

“We have started today. God willing, our target is that this work will be completed before Eid,” said Novriansyah.

In addition to the installation of gabions, at the same coordinates, reinforcement of the riverbank is also being carried out using large stones. This aims to direct the flow of water so that it no longer hits and enters the residential areas or productive land owned by residents around the Air Dingin River. (YH/E-4)
