Floods Up to 1.75 Metres Submerge Kebon Pala, Residents Begin Evacuating
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Flooding has once again submerged residents’ settlements in the Kebon Pala area, Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, early on Monday (20/4) with water levels reaching 1.75 metres.
“This morning, at 09.43 WIB, the water has now reached about 175 centimetres or 1.75 metres, and it has been rising continuously since early this morning,” said Sanusi, Head of RT 13/RW 04 in Kampung Melayu, at Kebon Pala, East Jakarta, on Monday.
The flooding began to intensify from 03.00 WIB. This condition has placed the area under alert level 2 due to the high water overflow.
According to Sanusi, this flooding was triggered by high rainfall intensity as well as water inflows from upstream areas, particularly from Katulampa and Depok, causing a significant increase in water discharge in a short time.
“The water started rising around 3 a.m., this has entered alert level 2. Besides the rain, there is also water inflow from Katulampa and Depok,” Sanusi explained.
Due to the high flooding, several residents have chosen to leave their homes for safety. However, the number of evacuees remains relatively small.
Sanusi stated that up to now, there are about five households (KK) that have evacuated. They have chosen to evacuate independently to nearby relatives’ homes.
“Some have evacuated, around five KK. They evacuated to their relatives’ houses,” said Sanusi.
Police officers were seen beginning to evacuate residents who wish to evacuate to safer places while also saving belongings from the flood.
Sanusi said that rain with quite high intensity has frequently fallen almost every day in recent times, especially in the afternoon to evening.
According to him, flooding in the Kebon Pala area has repeatedly occurred in the last few days.
The ongoing rain pattern makes water puddles difficult to recede optimally, thus increasing again when rain falls with high intensity.
Previously, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD DKI Jakarta) issued an early warning for potential tidal flooding expected to occur from 17 to 23 April 2026 in several northern coastal areas of Jakarta.
That tidal potential is triggered by the new moon phase on 17 April 2026 and perigee on 19 April 2026, which could increase the maximum sea level.
As a precautionary measure, BPBD DKI has prepared the 112 emergency service, which can be contacted by the public if emergency conditions occur.
The public can also monitor developments of tidal surge early warnings through BPBD’s official channels and the flood monitoring website of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.
