Flood strikes northern Java

SEMARANG, Central Java: The police have called on Idul Fitri
holidaymakers to avoid northern Java highways because the
flooding in several areas may continue and disrupt traffic.

Central Java police chief Maj. Gen. Harimas recommended
yesterday that holidaymakers take the southern routes instead.

The Idul Fitri holidays fall on March 3-4 and the surge in
traffic from West Java to Central and East Java is expected to
occur between Feb. 26 and March 1.

An estimated 3 million people will use the highway in this
year's Idul Fitri long weekend. Harimas said he will mobilize up
to 14,000 people to secure the traffic. (har)
