Flash Flood Survivors in Agam Welcome Ramadan with Joy at Temporary Shelters
Agam Regency (ANTARA) — A number of survivors of flash floods and landslides in Nagari Sungai Batang, Tanjung Raya District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, have enthusiastically welcomed Ramadan 1447 Hijriah from the Danantara temporary shelters (huntara).
"I am very happy to be able to occupy the temporary shelter, especially as we are about to observe the fasting month," said Erlina (59), one of the residents of the Danantara shelter in Agam Regency, on Tuesday.
Erlina, together with 15 households from Jorong Labuah, Nagari Sungai Batang, moved into the Danantara-built shelter on Saturday (14 February). The residents entered the shelters at the same time as 20 other households from Jorong Bancah, Nagari Sungai Batang.
"There are two shelters here — 15 households from Jorong Labuah and 20 households from Jorong Bancah. We all moved in together during the inauguration," said Erlina.
She said she was enthusiastic and grateful to be able to occupy the temporary shelter, meaning she no longer had to sleep in evacuation centres under severely limited conditions. For Tarawih prayers, the residents plan to worship at a nearby prayer hall (mushala) not far from the shelter.
"This morning we worked together to clean the prayer hall, and we are grateful that we no longer have to sleep in evacuation centres during Ramadan," she said.
Similarly, Fitri (24), another resident, said the temporary shelters had been of great help to the flash flood survivors, particularly with the fasting month just days away.
"Praise be to God, we have been able to move into the temporary shelters ahead of Ramadan," said the mother of one.
Although they cannot perform Tarawih prayers at the mosque, which was affected by the flash floods, she and the other shelter residents are still able to carry out the voluntary prayers at the nearest prayer hall.
Separately, Agam Regency Secretary Muhammad Lutfi welcomed the swift action by Danantara and PT Nindya Karya in constructing the temporary shelters for residents affected by the hydrometeorological disaster in the area.
"We are grateful for the concern and tangible contribution of Danantara and PT Nindya Karya in assisting post-disaster recovery efforts in Agam Regency," he said.
The shelters provide a temporary solution that is far more adequate than the previous evacuation conditions, whilst residents await the construction of permanent housing (huntap).
"We hope that PT Nindya Karya's contribution does not stop at the construction of temporary shelters, but continues through to the building of permanent housing," said Agam Regency Secretary Muhammad Lutfi.
