A five-year-old boy died after being struck by an Airport Train at the railway crossing in the Gamping Lor area, Ambarketawang, Gamping, this afternoon. The victim was hit while attempting to cross the crossing.

Public relations head of Sleman Police, AKP Salamun, said the victim was MH (5), a resident of Kulon Progo who currently lives with his parents in Gamping Lor.

‘The victim died after being struck by a train on the railway line in the Dusun Gamping Lor area, this afternoon around 15:15 local time,’ Salamun told reporters on Wednesday (4/3/2026).

He explained the incident occurred when the Airport Train on the YIA-Yogyakarta route was travelling from west to east. Based on station staff statements, the driver had repeatedly issued warnings.

‘The driver had sounded warning signals repeatedly when he saw the victim crossing the tracks while leading a bicycle. But because the distance was already too close, the accident could not be avoided,’ he said.

Moments after the incident, the train briefly stopped to report the incident to nearby station staff.

‘Station staff together with personnel conducted a sweep around the location and found the victim on the southern side of the rails, about 10 metres from the point of the incident,’ he said.

The incident was then reported to the police. Gamping Sector Police officers then conducted a crime scene investigation and coordinated with the Sleman Police’s Forensic Team.

‘The victim’s body was subsequently evacuated with volunteers and taken to PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital for further medical treatment,’ he said.

According to information received by officers, the location of the incident was relatively quiet. Therefore, there were no residents who directly witnessed the event.

‘The Preliminary suspicion is that the victim did not pay attention to the situation when crossing the rails,’ he said.

The police urged the public, especially parents, to increase supervision of children and not engage in activities around railway lines for everyone’s safety.
