Five vehicles chain-crash
BEKASI, West Java (JP): Five motor vehicles were involved in a collision on the Cikampek-Jakarta toll road here yesterday but no one was hurt.
The accident occurred where part of the road was being guarded by security officers for President Soeharto's arrival at an electronics plant.
The crash occurred when a Kijang minivan coming from Cikampek suddenly halted.
A Bhineka inter-city bus then hit the back of the Kijang. Another passenger bus called Warga Baru, a Suzuki minibus and a colt diesel minibus crashed consecutively into the Kijang.
It is not clear why the Kijang driver suddenly reduced his speed.
A police officer from the Bekasi precinct told The Jakarta Post that the accident did not claim any lives or cause any injuries.
He said that when the accident happened many police officers were on duty cordoning off parts of the toll road.
The President was about to inaugurate a television and computer tubes plant in Cibitung, some 10 kilometers east of the crash site.
The Terbit afternoon daily reported the security for the ceremony was to prevent possible disturbances.
This alert followed rumors that an exodus of Indonesian Democratic Party members from East and Central Java would come to Jakarta following the weekend riots. (kod)
