Five Photojournalists Reported Missing While Covering Mount Anak Krakatau

Five photojournalists have reportedly lost contact while on duty attempting to document the conditions of Mount Anak Krakatau. The five photographers, representing various news media outlets, have been unreachable since Monday (7/9/2026).

As of Tuesday (8/9/2026) evening, search teams are still conducting sweeps to locate the vessel carrying the photographers.

The Banten Regional Police Marine and Air Police Director, Commissioner Eko Hartanto, reported that in addition to the five photojournalists participating in the voyage to the Anak Krakatau waters, two ship crew members have also lost contact. The five photographers known to be missing include M Bagus Khoirumnas from LKBN Antara, Ari Basuki from Merdeka, Yudhis, a photographer for I News, Daus from the foreign news agency Anadolu Agency, and Donal, who is working as a freelancer.

Commissioner Eko stated that on Wednesday afternoon, a joint team would conduct a search for the photojournalists and the two crew members who are missing.

“The search is underway, involving 23 personnel from the National Police KP Sanjaya, 5 personnel from the Banten Regional Police Marine and Air Police, and 16 personnel from Basarnas,” said Commissioner Eko in a report received by journalists on Tuesday (8/9/2026).
