Five photographers show work of art

JAKARTA (JP): Five photographers will display their black-and- white works in a one-month long exhibition at the Mandarin Oriental hotel here beginning on Wednesday.

The photographers, Darwis Triadi, Artli Ali, Nico Dharmajungen, Suherry Arno and Warren Kiong, will exhibit their 69 photographs in a display called "The Work of Art".

"We hope to introduce fine art photography among Indonesians to increase appreciation toward photography," said Darwis, one of Indonesia's senior fashion photographers, at a media conference at the hotel on Monday.

"Until now, so many people (here) do not view photography as an art. The arts for them are paintings and sculptures," he added.

The theme of the pictures to be displayed will have nothing in common. Each photographer will try to show works, which are definitely different with their traditional objects, techniques and themes.

Darwis, for example, promised to display works that have nothing to do with models, which was his trademark for years.

"I'll show a number of works that has nothing to do with my strengths," he said.

Warren, who also runs a shop selling photography accessories, said his works would be about scores of objects he snapped pictures of while touring various places.

Darwis said the displayed photographs were for sale with prices ranging from Rp 1.5 million (US$215) to Rp 5 million each.

The proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the Ulurkan Tanganmu (Lend a Hand) Foundation, which dedicates itself to boosting the standard of health for poor children, and to finance future fine art picture exhibitions. (04/bsr)
