Midway through Ramadan, precisely on the seventeenth, Muslims commemorate the event of Nuzulul Qur’an. The Nuzulul Qur’an night gathering usually takes place in mosques after Tarawih prayers and is filled with communal Qur’an reading.

Based on the book Peristiwa Nuzulul Qur’an by Ahmad Fatih, Nuzulul Qur’an refers to the event of the revelation of the Qur’anic revelation. The Qur’anic verse itself was first revealed on 17 Ramadan, so that date is commemorated by Muslims every year.

As noted, the Nuzulul Qur’an event typically takes place in mosques. However, there are various obstacles that prevent a Muslim from participating in mosque activities, such as menstruation for women.

Even if you cannot go to the mosque to perform good deeds on the night of Nuzulul Qur’an, a Muslim can still utilise the night by doing righteous deeds at home. What are the deeds? Here are five night-time practices of Nuzulul Qur’an that can be performed at home.

5 Night-Time Practices for Nuzulul Qur’an You Can Do at Home

  1. Reading the Qur’an

In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 185, Allah SWT says: ‘Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed as guidance for humankind and clear proofs of the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).’ Therefore, reading the Qur’an in Ramadan, especially on the night of Nuzulul Qur’an, is a virtuous act.

Quoting from NU Online Lampung, there are at least five virtues of reading the Qur’an on the night of Nuzulul Qur’an: it provides guidance for life and direction from Allah; it is among the best of worship; it earns multiplied rewards; it offers intercession on the Day of Judgement; and it calms the soul and mind.

What about menstruating women? Based on the explanation in the book Strategi Jitu Meraih Lailatul Qadar by Candra Nila Murti Dewojati, menstruating women are not permitted to touch the mushaf Qur’an, but they are allowed to read its verses. So menstruating women can still fill the night by reciting Qur’anic verses without touching the mushaf.

  1. Performing the Night Prayer

Qiyamul lail or the night prayer is one of the principal acts during Ramadan, including on the night of Nuzulul Qur’an. Quoting from NU Online, there are five virtues that can be gained by performing the night prayer:

  • It is the foremost prayer after the obligatory five daily prayers.

  • It has virtues similar to giving charity in secret.

  • It is a hallmark of the righteous.

  • A person who performs night prayers will be boasted of by Allah to the angels.

  • His supplications will be accepted by Allah.

  1. Increasing Dhikr and Supplication

Dhikr and supplication are among acts that can be used to fill Ramadan. Dhikr can include phrases such as tasbih (subhanallah), tahmid (alhamdulillah), and other dhikr or good phrases.

As for supplications, one can recite any prayers that contain goodness, provided they do not contravene Sharia. There is also a recommended prayer to recite on Ramadan nights to gain the honour of Lailatul Qadar, with the following words:

Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu ’anni

(Arabic transliteration)

Meaning: ‘O Allah, indeed You are the Oft‑Forgiving, You love forgiveness; so forgive me.’

  1. Increasing Charity

Among the virtuous deeds that Muslims can perform during the fasting month is charity. In Hadiths recorded by Bukhari and Muslim, charity is described as a practice routinely performed by the Prophet Muhammad during Ramadan. Therefore a Muslim can enliven Ramadan nights, including the night of Nuzulul Qur’an, by giving charity, following the example of the final Prophet.

In the modern era, charity is made easier with online charitable giving or zakat platforms. So people can carry out this act at home easily without needing to go out.

  1. Attending Online Studies or Nuzulul Qur’an Commemoration Remotely

Technological progress enables studies and similar commemorations to be broadcast via social media such as YouTube and Instagram. So those who cannot attend the mosque can follow the Nuzulul Qur’an commemorations at home. Lectures delivered by renowned scholars can also be listened to to deepen one’s knowledge of Sharia.

There you have five night-time practices for the night of Nuzulul Qur’an that can be done at home. Hope it helps!

Nuzulul Qur’an Night Schedule 2026

As explained above, the night of Nuzulul Qur’an is commemorated on the seventeenth of Ramadan. When does that date arrive?

This year, the government through its isbat session determined that 1 Ramadan 1447 H fell on Thursday, 19 February 2026. That means the seventeenth day of Ramadan fell on Saturday, 7 March 2026.

In the Hijri calendar, a day changes at sunset, not at midnight as in the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, the seventeenth night of Ramadan 1447 H begins on Friday sunset, 6 March 2026, i.e., tonight.

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) also sets 1 Ramadan 1447 H on Thursday, 19 February 2026, so the Nuzulul Qur’an night schedule aligns with the government. On the other hand, Muhammadiyah has issued a different start date.

The Global Unified Islamic Calendar (KHGT) Muhammadiyan lists 1 Ramadan 1447 H falling on Wednesday, 18 February 2026. Consequently, Muhammadiyah’s version places the seventeenth day of Ramadan on Friday, 6 March 2026. This means the Nuzulul Qur’an night according to Muhammadiyah falls on Thursday night, 5 March 2026.

In simple terms, the 2026 Nuzulul Qur’an night schedule is:

  • Thursday night, 5 March 2026: Muhammadiyah version

  • Friday night, 6 March 2026: Government and NU version
