Floodwaters reaching two to five metres inundated the Periuk Damai Residential Estate in Periuk District, Tangerang City, Banten, on Sunday (8 March).

Flood submerged hundreds of homes in the Periuk Damai Residential Estate with water heights ranging from two metres to more than five metres. A total of 286 households spread across five RTs in RW 08 were affected.

The floods, which began in the early hours of Sunday, were triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall. This caused the Cirarab River to overflow. In addition, several breached levees and the overflow of water from Lake Situ Bulakan, which serves as a water storage reservoir, worsened the flood.

The local RW chief, Heri, said this flood was the second in the year and worse than the previous flood.

“Last month, floods were about two metres to four and a half metres high. On Sunday it reached two to five and a half metres. This was beyond residents’ predictions, who expected the flood height to be half of last month’s; it turns out it was higher, and the repaired levee collapsed again,” concluded Heri.

Meanwhile, Periuk Sub-district Head Andhika Nugraha said there are 25 flood points across five kelurahan in Periuk District, affecting more than 9,000 people in total.

“For the floods in Periuk District, there are 25 points across five kelurahan. This is because of surface runoff and some leaky levees, which have not been able to hold back the high water flow that leads to overflow,” said Andhika.

Of the 25 flood points, residents have taken shelter at 18 relief posts provided. The total number of affected households reaches 3,337 KK, or 9,752 people, while about 8,500 residents have evacuated, he added.

Residents are hoping for swift logistical assistance, given the floods occurred during Ramadan.
