First-Time Buffalo Slaughter at Andilan Kebo, Pramono: Usually Only See It in Party Logos
JAKARTA – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung joined for the first time in slaughtering a buffalo during the Andilan Kebo tradition held by the Majelis Kaum Betawi in the Pondok Rangon area, Cipayung Subdistrict, East Jakarta, on Wednesday (18/3/2026). This moment forms part of the preservation of the distinctive Betawi tradition of gotong royong ahead of Eid al-Fitr. During the event, nine buffaloes were slaughtered and the meat distributed to the community, particularly to families in need. Pramono admitted that this was his first such experience. He even joked that he is more accustomed to seeing buffaloes as symbols of political parties rather than in person. “Earlier, nine buffaloes were slaughtered. Then the meat was distributed to families in need,” said Pramono. The Chairman of the Customary Council of Majelis Kaum Betawi, Fauzi Bowo or Foke, explained that Andilan Kebo is a tradition of Betawi community gotong royong through a collective contribution or joint subscription system. The buffaloes are purchased collectively, then slaughtered, and the meat is shared with residents, including those in need. According to Foke, this tradition is not merely a cultural activity but also reflects strong social and religious values in Betawi community life. “In every asset we possess, there is a right of others, whether they ask for it or not,” he stated. Through this tradition, the Betawi community not only safeguards their cultural heritage but also strengthens solidarity and social care among residents.
