Firecrackers (1)

Firecrackers (1)

The letter from Mrs. Yattie in the Feb. 14, 1995 issue of your
newspaper concerning the lighting of firecrackers during the
Ramadhan month is finding my full sympathy. It is really very
difficult to understand that there are no restrictions against
the use of firecrackers in Indonesia although Ramadhan, as far as
I see it, is considered to be a time of thoughtfulness and peace.

In my case I have talked many times to the RT (neighborhood
leader) in charge and also to the police in order to cut down the
use of firecrackers, at least during the night, but so far
without any success. The lighting of firecrackers in the vicinity
of my house is going ahead at all times of the day and night,
especially between midnight and sunrise. I really doubt that
people following the rituals of Ramadhan enjoy this "nuisance",
as Mrs. Yattie expressed herself!

I can understand the children's excitement during the Ramadhan
month but suggest that firecrackers only be allowed at the end of
the fasting month, to celebrate this special event. Such an
arrangement, in my opinion, would better suit the meaning of this
event and I am sure would find the acceptance of all people,
especially as fasting rituals could be followed with even more
concentration and everybody could enjoy a more peaceful sleep!
