East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Division rescued a 350kg sacrificial cow that had fallen into a drain in Kayu Putih, Pulogadung, East Jakarta.

The incident involved a 350kg sacrificial cow belonging to Mr Suardi that became trapped in a drain at Pulomas Utara 3, RT 001/RW 14, Kayu Putih Village, Pulogadung Subdistrict, according to East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Division Operational Section Chief Abdul Wahid, confirmed in Jakarta on Wednesday (27/5).

He stated that the rescue operation began immediately after the department received a report from residents about the cow falling into the drainage channel.

“Staff received the information at 9:10 am WIB from the local RT chairman, Mr Warjo. The cow was discovered trapped in the drain while being prepared for slaughter,” Abdul said.

The cow, owned by Suardi, is believed to have panicked during slaughter preparation, causing it to run and fall into the one-metre wide and approximately two-metre deep drain.

Residents who witnessed the incident attempted to assist but, due to the cow’s large size and the narrow channel, they requested assistance from firefighters.

Two rescue units from sectors 51 and 512 were deployed to the scene with a total of 13 personnel. The first unit arrived at 9:12 am WIB, followed by the second five minutes later.

Firefighters began the rescue operation at 9:19 am WIB using equipment and ropes to lift the cow from the drain.

“The operation was conducted carefully as the cow was in a confined space and it was crucial to ensure it did not sustain further injuries,” Abdul explained.

After nearly an hour, the cow was successfully rescued at 10:11 am WIB and was unharmed. The situation returned to normal once the rescue concluded.

The incident drew attention from local residents who observed the firefighters’ efforts.

East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Division urged the public to exercise caution when handling sacrificial animals, particularly during slaughter, to prevent similar incidents.
