Several incidents on the Island of the Gods caught the attention of detikBali readers this week, 6-12 April 2026. From Balinese residents facing fines for burning rubbish, to two seamen dying after being assaulted and set on fire in Benoa, to a glowing object going viral in Bali’s skies. Here is a summary.

Balinese Residents Caught Burning Rubbish Face Fines

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has emphasised that residents burning organic or inorganic waste face light criminal penalties (Tipiring). “Law enforcement will take action. Yes, there are fines,” Koster said at the Bali Governor’s Office on Tuesday (7/4/2026).

Koster views residents burning waste as a bad practice. However, he must confirm whether what is being burnt is actually waste or wood, bamboo, and the like.

“If wood is burnt, bamboo from post-ceremony rituals is burnt, that’s no problem. But if it’s waste, like residual waste or other types being burnt, that’s prohibited,” he explained.

Previously, the Suwung Final Disposal Site (TPA) officially stopped accepting organic waste from 1 April 2026. This policy aims to accelerate the strengthening of source-based waste processing systems at the village level, in line with directives from the Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq. With this policy, TPA Suwung now only accepts inorganic waste and residue.

Head of the Bali Forestry and Environmental Agency, I Made Dwi Arbani, said this step responds to the high composition of organic waste in Bali, reaching 65 percent of total waste generation, with high moisture content.

“So far, organic waste has dominated the waste at the TPA. This condition has the potential to produce flammable methane gas, unpleasant odours, environmental pollution from leachate, and accelerate the landfill’s capacity,” Arbani said in his statement on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

Suspected of Sexual Violence Involvement, PMI from Jembrana, Bali, Arrested in the US

An Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI) with initials Putu JW was reportedly arrested by authorities in Florida, United States (US). The man from Jembrana, Bali, is suspected of involvement in a sexual violence case that went viral on social media.

Head of the Jembrana Manpower and Industry Office, Kadek Mirah Ananta Sukma Dewi, confirmed information about a Jembrana resident entangled in a legal case in the US. The Jembrana Regency Government (Pemkab) is also monitoring developments in the case.

“Indeed, there is that information from the media, (the incident) in the Florida area. But we haven’t communicated with the PMI yet, and the family hasn’t been able to communicate either. We are still coordinating with the Head of BP3MI Bali,” Mirah said when confirmed by detikBali on Thursday (9/4/2026).

Mirah explained that her side is continuously monitoring developments in the case through the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in the US. So far, she admits to only following the case’s progress through local media reports in Florida.

“For now, we cannot provide a detailed chronology,” she added.

Pemkab Jembrana, she said, is coordinating with BP2MI and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This step is taken to provide legal assistance and ensure Putu JW receives his rights during the legal process.

“This assistance effort also aims to seek balanced information as a basis for submitting a request for legal protection for the individual,” she concluded.

Two Seamen Dead After Being Beaten and Set on Fire in Benoa

Two bodies of ship crew members (ABK) were found in the area around Jalan Raya Pelabuhan Benoa, Pedungan Village, South Denpasar Sub-district, Denpasar, Bali, on Friday morning (10/4/2026). When found, both victims were in a burnt condition. Police have arrested five perpetrators within less than 10 hours of the incident.

The incident began when victims ER (30) and HA (29), along with their colleague Budi, were consuming alcoholic drinks in the Benoa Port Dock area.

In an intoxicated state, ER made a video call to one of the perpetrators, IS, and allegedly challenged him to fight while threatening to kill.

“Exactly around 03:00 early morning, the victim challenged the perpetrators to fight via video call under the influence of alcohol,” said Head of Criminal Investigation at Denpasar Police Resort, Kompol Agus Riwayanto Diputra, on Friday (10/4/2026).

After the challenge, the victims went to the meeting location in front of Tuna Sirip Biru restaurant.

Five perpetrators arrived on motorbikes and immediately attacked. The victims were beaten with wooden blocks and stones, and kicked repeatedly.

“The witness along with the two victims was immediately beaten and mobbed. The witness then fled and hid behind the restaurant,” said Head of Public Relations at Denpasar Police Resort, Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya.

About 30 minutes after the beating, the perpetrators returned to the location. While the victims were in a weakened state, the perpetrators poured petrol and set their bodies on fire while they were still alive.

“After the victims were in a weak condition, the perpetrators returned to burn them. Petrol was poured and then they were set on fire,” said Agus.

The witness saw the act directly.

“The witness came out and saw several people burning the victims, then contacted the Banjar Pesanggaran customary leader,” said Adi.

The commotion was first heard around 04:30 WITA. Pecalang of Banjar Pesanggaran, Wayan Diyantara, arrived at the location around 05:00 WITA and found two victims in a burnt condition.

Victim HA (29) suffered burns on his hands and back, as well as open wounds on his head and temple.

The other victim, ER, was found without clothes with a torn wound on his waist and an open wound on his temple.
