JAKARTA - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that Indonesia does not need funding assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This statement was made following a meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday (14/6/2026). “The IMF does not have the authority to do that. But they provide assistance funds for countries that need them,” Purbaya said in his statement, quoted on Thursday (16/4/2026). He assessed that the IMF lacks the authority to create specific policies to dampen global economic turbulence. Purbaya conveyed that the IMF continues to provide assistance funds for countries in need. However, Indonesia is not in such a position. The fiscal condition is deemed sufficiently strong. The government also has an adequate budget cushion. Purbaya mentioned that Indonesia’s fiscal buffer reaches Rp 420 trillion. This amount is considered sufficient to face various global risks. He also shared the IMF’s assessment of Indonesia’s economic condition. According to Purbaya, the IMF views Indonesia’s economic resilience as still intact amid global pressures. The IMF once questioned how Indonesia has managed to endure amid world economic uncertainty. This approach has given the national economy greater room to absorb external shocks. The government has also prepared policies to mitigate the impact of energy price fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainties. “So our economy has already experienced acceleration when there is an additional shock from global uncertainty due to high oil prices, thus we can absorb the shocks that occur,” he said.
