FIM approves Jatinangor track
JAKARTA (JP): The International Motor Federation's (FIM) top official, Tonny Skillington, has found the West Java's Jatinangor circuit suitable for the World 250cc Motor Cross Championships' 12th leg in August.
"I am satisfied and impressed with the circuit. The circuit is suitable for the world motor cross championships," Skillington said after a thorough inspection on Sunday.
Skillington left for England on Monday to report on his visit to the circuit.
Preparations are still underway at the circuit which is in a valley in the Jatinangor regency near Bandung. The track slopes because it is in a valley. A semi-permanent wooden bridge will be built for VIP spectators.
State-owned telecommunications firm PT Telkom will supply 28 phone lines for the organizers and participants.
Indonesia was given the championship leg after successfully organizing the 125cc world championships in Yogyakarta over the last three years.
The state minister for youth and sports affairs, Hayono Isman, will open the race which will be held on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.
Several other dignitaries including President Soeharto's son, Hutomo Mandala Putra, and West Java's governor, will also attend.
The two-day championships will be broadcast live on ANteve.
Competitors from 15 countries will compete in the championships and are expected to arrive in Indonesia on July 29 to test the track. The riders come from countries including the United States, Italy, England, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, New Zealand, Japan and Australia.
Besides the 250cc division, the organizer plans to hold 125cc and 80cc events for local riders. (lnt)
