'Filthy three' go to restroom

A campaign against the United States, Australia and Canada on Friday was taken, literally, into the restrooms at the Bali International Convention Center, where the UN meeting was held over the past two weeks.

Posters carrying pictures of a monster with three heads depicting the U.S., Australia and Canada, which non-governmental organization activists called the "filthy three" were plastered inside and outside of the restrooms at the BICC.

"This is a creative dirty campaign," said one delegate interviewed in front of a restroom.

It was Greenpeace activists who started the campaign against the three countries, which are being accused of siding too much with their multinational corporations in the negotiations in Bali.

Greenpeace also made a local Balinese ogoh-ogoh monster effigy with three heads depicting United States, Australia and Canada, but could not use it was considered offensive to the Balinese villagers. -- JP

The last day of the Bali meeting marked the beginning of slower business days for restaurants in the Nusa Dua resort compound.

As the delegations packed their bags and left Bali, the restaurants' waiters had to do their utmost to lure customers.

"Come on miss, have lunch in our place, we give you 60 percent discounts if you dine in our place," one of the waiters said as some of the delegation members passed.

He said that the days would be as slow as they used to be so they had to show their best side to bring customers in. --JP

Cell phones hotter than laptops

During the UN meeting in Bali, mobile phones are apparently a hotter commodity than thousands of dollars worth of laptops.

A female reporter from an American newswire had her mobile phone stolen as she interviewed Emil Salim, chairman of the meeting.

She said that the phone had sounded during the interview so she had to take it out of her bag and turn it off.

I think it fell out of my hand then, but when I looked down it wasn't there anymore".

However, several unattended laptops in the media center, including hers, remained untouched during the quiet hours of lunch on Friday, despite their obviously higher price. -- JP

Late night closing disrupts many

As the preparatory committee (prepcom) IV meeting drew to a close, negotiations over some contentious issues in the draft plan of implementation became more heated, disrupting the travel itineraries of organizers as well as those from the press covering the event.

A staff member from the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Jakarta said that his plane ticket for the next day had to be postponed due to delays in the negotiations.

A similar fate was experienced by a reporter from Jakarta who had to reschedule her flight from Friday night to Saturday afternoon.

"I had planned to travel to Jakarta tonight at 10 p.m. But then, we were told that the negotiations would continue until midnight, so I have to reschedule my flight," she said.
