FH UI Case, JPPI: Paradox of a Centre for Learning Law and Justice Becoming a Site of Sexual Violence
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - National Coordinator of the Indonesian Educators Monitoring Network (JPPI), Ubaid Matraji, stated that the sexual violence case perpetrated by 16 students from the Faculty of Law (FH) at Universitas Indonesia (UI) represents a paradox in the world of education.
“The case at FH UI reveals a serious paradox. Sexual violence occurred in a space that should serve as a centre for learning law and justice,” Ubaid said in a press statement on Tuesday (14/4/2026).
He added that the case could indicate that safe learning spaces are no longer secure for seekers of knowledge.
This is evident from JPPI data for the first quarter of January-March 2026, which recorded 233 cases of violence in educational environments.
Of that number, the perpetrators were education and support staff at 33 per cent, students at 30 per cent, adults at 24 per cent, and others at 13 per cent.
The dominance of perpetrators from education and support staff circles shows the collapse of moral exemplars in the education system.
“We are facing an emergency situation. Violence in education is no longer isolated cases but a systemic pattern,” he further stated.
According to Ubaid, the FH UI case is a harsh slap in the face. If violence can occur even in educational spaces, where else can students and pupils feel safe?
Previously reported, 16 University of Indonesia (UI) students are suspected of committing sexual harassment against a female student in the faculty.
