FDA Approves Novo Nordisk's Weekly Insulin for Type 2 Diabetes
Good news for people with type 2 diabetes worldwide. Global pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk has announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted official approval for a weekly long-acting basal insulin. The innovation comes in the form of a basal insulin with an injection concentration of 700 units/mL. The introduction of weekly insulin is projected to be a major breakthrough for patients who have relied on daily basal insulin injections to manage their blood sugar levels. The FDA approval was based on positive results from the ONWARDS phase 3a clinical trial program, which involved approximately 2,680 adults with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes. The study showed that weekly insulin was equally effective as daily insulin in lowering HbA1c levels, with a consistent safety profile. Novo Nordisk’s President and CEO, Mike Doustdar, stated that this move is part of the company’s commitment to continue innovating despite some industry players retreating from the insulin sector. “We reaffirm our commitment to supporting innovation, access, and supply for millions of patients who rely on insulin daily,” Doustdar said. In Indonesia, the main challenge in diabetes management is patient adherence. Many patients feel psychologically and practically burdened by the need for daily injections. The availability of a weekly insulin option is expected to simplify treatment and significantly improve patients’ quality of life. Novo Nordisk has been present in Indonesia for over 20 years, offering various innovations including co-formulated insulin and GLP-1 therapy for type 2 diabetes and obesity. While this innovation brings new hope, the public is advised to always consult a specialist doctor before adjusting doses or starting new treatment regimens to ensure safety and effectiveness tailored to individual conditions.
