Fasting for people with diabetes improves the hormonal system
Fasting for people with diabetes also increases insulin sensitivity. This is because fasting helps body cells become more responsive to insulin, making blood sugar easier to manage, said Prof Hari Hendarto in Tangerang on Wednesday.
Another benefit for people with diabetes when observing fasting is healthy weight loss during the fast, which will reduce visceral fat, the main enemy of diabetes.
Improving average blood sugar levels (HbA1c) gradually, helping to lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol profiles, reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications.
Medically, the majority of people with Type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is well controlled are allowed to fast. However, this decision must be based on the recommendations and monitoring by a doctor.
Prof Hari adds that safe fasting for diabetics is to monitor blood sugar independently and regularly — at morning, noon and evening. Doing finger-prick blood tests does not invalidate the fast according to medical and religious fatwas.
Apply the 2-4-2 pattern: two glasses at iftar, four glasses throughout the night, and two glasses at suhoor to prevent dehydration that could worsen kidney conditions.
Discontinue the fast immediately if blood sugar is below 70 mg/dL or spikes above 300 mg/dL. Life and health are the top priorities in worship.
“Never change the dosage of medicine or insulin on your own. Usually, doctors will advise reducing the dosage of medicine at suhoor to prevent hypoglycaemia during the day, and adjusting the dosage at iftar,” he said.
“At iftar, avoid the ‘revenge’ phenomenon. Start with plain water and a maximum of 1-3 dates. Avoid fried foods and overly sweet kolak. Eat gradually so the pancreas is not ‘shocked’.
“Fasting can be a great transition moment to improve lifestyle and metabolic health, but because every person with diabetes has a highly personal condition, guidance or consultation from an expert is the key to safety,” he said.
