JAKARTA — The death of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, General (Retired) Try Sutrisno, has brought profound sadness to the nation. The composed, decisive, and humble figure concluded his long journey as both a military officer and statesman, leaving an indelible mark and cherished memories among his family, relatives, and the Indonesian people.

Vice President during the 1993–1998 period, Try Sutrisno passed away at the age of 90 at Gatot Soebroto Military Hospital (RSPAD) on the morning of Monday, 2 March 2026.

In honour of Try Sutrisno’s passing, the Presidential Palace instructed every state institution to fly their flags at half-mast. This was communicated by State Secretariat Minister Prasetyo Hadi through circular letter number B-02/M/S/TU.00.00/03/2026 dated 2 March 2026.

The government also designated 2–4 March 2026 as National Days of Mourning. The deceased’s body was laid to rest at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery (TMP) in Jakarta on the same day.

The funeral procession was conducted with full military honours and was directly led by President Prabowo Subianto, serving as the Ceremony Inspector. The atmosphere was solemn and reverent throughout the final tribute to Try Sutrisno, with rain falling during the funeral service as if the heavens themselves mourned the loss.

President Prabowo expressed hope that the charitable works of the deceased would be accepted in the sight of God Almighty.

“May the path of service that he undertook serve as an example to us all, and may his soul find its rightful place in the hereafter,” Prabowo said.

Numerous dignitaries attended the funeral, including Vice President Gibran Rakabuming and members of the Red and White Cabinet. Several former national leaders were also present, including the sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), the tenth and twelfth Vice Presidents Jusuf Kalla (JK), and the eleventh Vice President Boediono.

For President Prabowo, Try Sutrisno represented a true military officer and humble leader. Prabowo described Try as one of Indonesia’s finest sons.

“I remember him as a true military officer and a simple, decisive leader who placed the motherland above all else,” Prabowo stated on his official Instagram account on Monday.

Prabowo added that Try Sutrisno will always serve as an inspiration to all.

“His exemplary character, courage, and dedication to the nation will forever be an inspiration to us all,” he said.

Vice President Gibran Rakabuming shared several photographs of his time with Try Sutrisno during the deceased’s lifetime on his Instagram account @gibran_rakabuming. In his post, Gibran noted that the nation is grieving the loss of a leader who dedicated his life to the country, from his service as a military officer to his role as a statesman.

“His exemplary conduct, integrity, and service will always remain an important part of Indonesia’s national history,” Gibran stated on his Instagram account.

He further prayed that the deceased would find the best place in God’s presence. For Try Sutrisno’s family, Gibran prayed for strength in their time of loss.

“May God Almighty accept all his acts of worship and service to the nation and state, forgive his shortcomings, and grant his bereaved family steadfastness, amen,” he said.
