Families Distraught as Rubbish Landfill Collapse Claims Lives at Bantar Gebang Facility
A rubbish heap approximately 50 metres high at Zone IV of the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi City, West Java, collapsed on Sunday (8 March 2026) at around 14:30 Western Indonesia Time. The incident buried several workers and vehicles in the vicinity under accumulated waste.
According to preliminary data from the Jakarta Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas DKI) on Monday morning, 13 people were affected by the incident, comprising five fatalities, four survivors, and four others still being searched for. Family members of the missing victims gathered at the site awaiting rescue updates.
The Ministry of Environment and Waste Management Authority (KLH/BPLH) has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident, including enforcement measures to ensure that the capital’s waste management does not result in further loss of life. The Jakarta Provincial Environmental Agency (DLH) has implemented emergency response operations with coordinated handling involving multiple agencies working together.
The search and rescue operation utilises heavy equipment and personnel from various relevant agencies, methodically scouring the incident site. Recovered bodies are being transported to Polri Keramat Jati Hospital.
Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that the government is prioritising the evacuation of all victims whilst initiating a comprehensive investigation to strictly prosecute any negligence in waste management that endangers public safety.
