Fadli Proposes Bilateral Cultural Programmes Between Indonesia and Uruguay
Jakarta — Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has proposed a series of bilateral cultural programmes that can be established between Indonesia and Uruguay, as the two nations’ diplomatic relations enter their 60th year.
“We very warmly welcome bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Uruguay, particularly in the field of culture. As a follow-up, we can launch a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for various important cooperations. As we know, both Indonesia and Uruguay are culturally rich nations, and this is the right time to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries,” stated the Minister of Culture in remarks received in Jakarta on Saturday.
Fadli proposed a series of programmes designed to showcase the culture of each nation, including art exhibitions, museum development, and artist exchanges between Indonesian and Uruguayan cultural practitioners.
“We strongly support cultural activists in participating in international residencies, including between Uruguayan and Indonesian artists. Residencies are an excellent programme to undertake, as they serve as a platform to showcase the cultural expression of each nation. We have already developed several programme proposals, and perhaps in the future Indonesia and Uruguay can further develop their respective ideas,” he said.
The Minister of Culture also requested Uruguay’s support for Indonesia’s candidacy as a Member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) for the upcoming term, with elections scheduled for June 2026.
Uruguay’s Ambassador Cristina Gonzalez expressed hope for continued cultural diplomacy with Indonesia.
“Strategic dialogue between Uruguay and Indonesia is important as a means of strengthening bilateral relations through the advancement of culture in both nations. We are delighted to continue synergies across various sectors and build people-to-people contact between Uruguay and Indonesia,” she said.
“Indonesia and Uruguay can make culture the foundation for strengthening sustainable bilateral relations. To that end, we can promptly establish cooperation in various fields, particularly in the cultural sector,” concluded Minister of Culture Fadli.
