Facing Vehicle Congestion on Ketapang–Gilimanuk Route, Ministry of Transportation Adjusts Operations and Adds Fleet
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Transportation is striving to optimise ferry transport services on the Ketapang–Gilimanuk route. “Optimisation of services includes adding fleet and adjusting operations to anticipate a surge in passenger flow,” said Director General of Sea Transportation, Muhammad Masyhud, in an official statement on Wednesday (25/3/2026). He stated that the potential surge in passengers concentrated in a specific period could cause long queues, longer waiting times, and reduced comfort during the journey. “Therefore, thorough travel planning and collective awareness are needed so that the 2026 Eid return flow can proceed safely, smoothly, and comfortably for all sea transport and ferry service users,” he said. “We are committed to providing the best service to the public. However, the smoothness of the return flow is also greatly influenced by the active role of the public in wisely managing travel times,” Masyhud continued. He said that the 2026 Eid holiday has the potential to cause a significant increase in the number of passengers and vehicles at the same time, especially in the Tapal Kuda region (Pasuruan, Probolinggo, Lumajang, Jember, Bondowoso, Situbondo, and Banyuwangi) as well as the Madura Islands. “We urge the public to schedule trips earlier or choose alternative times outside the peak return flow period to avoid congestion that may occur at Ketapang Port,” Masyhud said. In addition to good travel planning, the Ministry of Transportation urges the public to utilise official information services regarding port and crossing conditions, purchase tickets online, and follow the instructions of on-site officers for collective smoothness and safety. The main crossing through Ketapang Port to Gilimanuk Port is estimated to experience a surge in vehicle and passenger volume during that period.
