Facing Geopolitical Challenges, Indonesia Strengthens Collaboration to Safeguard National Energy Security
Jakarta, VIVA – Amid today’s geopolitical and geo-economic conditions, the Government of Indonesia and Pertamina are strengthening commitments to collaboration to safeguard national energy security.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia stated that geopolitical, geo-economic challenges and global political tensions are creating uncertainty. The view of almost all countries is that the path forward is becoming less clear.
‘The impact is not only felt by countries that are at odds, but by almost all countries, and indeed almost all people around the world, including in Indonesia. But I must convey that from the unsettled geopolitical-geo-economic conditions, the economy grew in the first quarter,’ he said at the opening of IPA Convex 50, which took place at Ice BSD City from 20 to 22 May 2026.
He also explained that nearly all countries are now thinking of protecting their own nations. This is done by both oil-producing and non-oil-producing countries.
‘However we are grateful that in such conditions, under the President’s directive, we must urgently seek energy alternatives that do not merely prioritise fossil-based fuels. When our crude lifting targets are not reached, there must be another path we must pursue,’ he clarified.
In parallel, Pertamina also reaffirmed its commitment to continue strengthening national energy resilience amid the increasingly complex dynamics of the global energy industry as the era of easy energy ends, geopolitical tensions rise, and global supply chains are disrupted.
Facing these challenges, Pertamina remains optimistic. Strengthening strategic collaboration, accelerating technology adoption, and optimising domestic energy production are keys to sustaining the national energy supply.
This was stated by Pertamina’s Deputy President Director, Oki Muraza, in a Global Executive Talk session entitled ‘The End of Easy Energy: The New Reality of Oil and Gas’ at the same event.
‘In essence, the era of easy energy has passed. However, looking further, particularly in Indonesia, we still have very large opportunities. So, for investors, energy industry practitioners, and regulators, Indonesia offers so many opportunities that can be developed,’ he said.
