Extreme Weather Hits Makassar, Students Learn Online 25-28 February
The Department of Education (Disdik) of Makassar City, South Sulawesi, has implemented online learning for educational units at PAUD/TK, elementary and junior secondary school levels, both public and private, in Makassar City from 25 to 28 February 2026, due to extreme weather affecting South Sulawesi.
The policy is set out in Circular Letter Number 400.3.5/33/Disdik/II/2026 concerning the Implementation of Online Learning at PAUD/TK, Elementary and Junior Secondary School Educational Units.
“Yes, we are implementing an online learning system from 25 to 28 February,” said Makassar Disdik Head Achi Soleman to CNNIndonesia.com on Wednesday (25/2).
Achi explained that the policy was adopted following an increase in the intensity of high rainfall in Makassar City based on an early warning of extreme weather from the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) Region IV South Sulawesi.
The high rainfall has the potential to cause flooding, water accumulation, and pose threats to the safety and health of educational unit residents.
“To prevent this and ensure the smooth running of the learning process, face-to-face learning activities are temporarily suspended and replaced with online/distance learning,” he explained.
Nevertheless, Achi said teachers are still required to carry out learning according to schedule and provide materials and assignments effectively and proportionally.
“Meanwhile, students are expected to follow online learning in an orderly manner from their respective homes,” he said.
Achi urged all parents or guardians to supervise and ensure their children participate well in online learning activities.
“We hope that all educational units can implement this policy with full responsibility to maintain collective safety amid the extreme weather conditions affecting Makassar City,” he said.
