Jakarta — Heavy rainfall has the potential to disrupt operations across multiple transport modes during the 2026 Eid holiday exodus, including trains, aircraft and ferries.

Transport analyst Deddy Herlambang stated that weather conditions represent an important factor requiring anticipation in organising this year’s holiday travel. According to him, heavy rain can affect the readiness of transport infrastructure and operational capabilities across various sectors.

“Railway infrastructure will not reach optimal maintenance conditions because railway tracks frequently affected by flooding require separate mitigation measures,” said Deddy when contacted on Monday (9 March 2026).

Beyond railways, the aviation sector will also be heavily dependent on weather conditions. Deddy noted that airlines typically adjust their operational schedules in line with weather conditions deemed safe for flight operations.

“The aviation industry will also adjust to weather conditions considered ideal for flying,” he said.

Similar considerations apply to sea and lake ferry operations. According to Deddy, vessels can only sail when weather conditions permit.

Beyond affecting transport modes, heavy rainfall also risks worsening road conditions used by travellers. “The current challenge is heavy rainfall. Road infrastructure will deteriorate if only patched roads with potholes are addressed,” said Deddy.

He added that roads damaged by rain create a risk of traffic disruptions, particularly along main holiday travel routes.

On another note, Deddy assessed that the government has prepared several policies to encourage travellers to use public transport.
