Explosions heard again in Abu Dhabi; Indonesian Ambassador urges citizens to take shelter
Abu Dhabi — A tense situation occurred in Abu Dhabi on Monday morning, 2 March at approximately 09:04 local time, following loud explosions heard in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Fighter jet aircraft sounds were heard repeatedly passing overhead, observed from the Al Reef Abu Dhabi residential area approximately 10 kilometres from Zayed International Airport, followed by loud bangs believed to originate from air defence artillery. Emergency alert sirens wailed, signalling a state of alert.
The strong vibrations and explosion sounds heard caused civilian activities to temporarily cease, while security forces tightened surveillance and restricted access to the airport area from the previous day onwards.
The Indonesian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Judha Nugraha, has issued an official advisory to all Indonesian nationals (WNI) present in Abu Dhabi and surrounding areas.
“We request all Indonesian nationals to remain calm and immediately take protective measures. Stay indoors or in your respective residences (take shelter), keep away from windows, and avoid outdoor activities until the situation is declared safe,” said Ambassador Judha when contacted via text message.
He also emphasised that the Indonesian Embassy in Abu Dhabi is currently engaged in intensive coordination with local authorities and the crisis response team to monitor the situation’s development and ensure the safety of Indonesian nationals.
“The Embassy continues to communicate with local security authorities and the crisis response team. We are also opening emergency communication channels for Indonesian nationals who require assistance,” he said.
As of the time of reporting, no official statement has been obtained from local authorities regarding the scale of damage or potential casualties. However, the atmosphere in the UAE capital appeared safe and normal despite an increase in military patrols and security measures at several strategic points.
Indonesian nationals are urged to continue monitoring official information from the Indonesian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and refrain from sharing unverified information to avoid panic.
Further developments will be reported following official confirmation from the relevant authorities.
