Jakarta (ANTARA) - Criminal law expert from Binus University, Ahmad Sofyan, has stressed that the case of the acid attack on Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, Andrie Yunus, must be uncovered down to the main actors behind it, for the sake of justice for the victim and the wider public.

In a public discussion in Jakarta on Monday (30/3), he conveyed that the principle of the rule of law emphasises that every citizen holds an equal position before the law without exception.

“No one should be immune from the law. This case must also be brought to the general court, not the military court,” said Ahmad, as quoted from a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Ahmad assessed that the acid splashing incident against Andrie Yunus can be categorised as an attempted premeditated murder, so law enforcement authorities are obliged to investigate not only the field perpetrators but also those who gave the orders.

The suspicion of premeditated murder against Andrie Yunus is not just his own opinion, but has become the view of various expert circles and criminal law experts.

He also highlighted the importance of military sector reform, including through revisions to the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Law, so that there is no immunity in the legal process.

He further opined that such reform is an important part of strengthening the supremacy of law and the accountability of state institutions in the democratic system.

On the same occasion, social-political analyst from Jakarta State University, Ubedilah Badrun, assessed that Andrie Yunus and KontraS are an important part of civil society that consistently voices human rights issues and security sector reform.

Moreover, he mentioned that the attack on Andrie occurred after public advocacy activities, including discussions and podcasts at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office and the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH), which discussed remilitarisation issues.

“Public solidarity is needed to ensure this case is uncovered to its roots,” said Ubedilah.

The discussion, held hybrid by the Indonesia Youth Congress (IYC), was titled Supremacy of Law and Accountability of Apparatus: Investigating the Acid Attack on KontraS Activist, Civil-Military Judicial Reform, the Future of Human Rights and Indonesian Democracy.

The event was attended by students, researchers, and civil society as a space for consolidating ideas to promote the supremacy of law, civil-military judicial reform, and protection for human rights defenders in Indonesia.
