Expanding Digital Payment Access, GoPay Supports BI's Cross-Border QRIS Expansion in China
Bank Indonesia (BI) has once again launched a programme to expand cross-border QRIS transactions in China, after previously succeeding in doing so in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan.
Accordingly, Head of GoPay Wallet, Kelvin Timotius, assured that GoPay is also fully supporting BI’s programme to open up broader economic opportunities through digital payments.
He stated that Indonesians visiting China can now make payments at merchants using QRIS by scanning Alipay and UnionPay QR codes through digital payment applications in Indonesia.
“Cross-border QRIS payments through the GoPay application have shown significant growth in various countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Japan. Now, GoPay is ready to support QRIS transactions or payments in China,” said Kelvin in his statement on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.
He assured that GoPay continues to play an active role in supporting Bank Indonesia’s efforts to expand the reach of cross-border QRIS, including the latest expansion to China.
“We remain committed to providing an easy, secure, and affordable transaction experience for users, both for domestic and international needs,” he said.
The presence of GoPay payments in cross-border networks provides convenience for users to make payments abroad without needing to exchange money and with transparent exchange rates.
The benefits of expanding QRIS transactions domestically include helping tourism SMEs and merchants in Indonesia receive digital payments from foreign tourists.
“Thus, this will further facilitate activities in the national tourism sector,” said Kelvin.
He added that broader cross-border cooperation will continue to drive financial inclusion and strengthen Indonesia’s digital economy ecosystem.
“And it will become a reliable solution for Indonesians in carrying out various activities abroad,” he said.
