Exhibition of children's paintings

JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro is scheduled to open an exhibition of children's paintings on Monday, Sept. 11.

The exhibition, which will be held at the Herwino Art Gallery in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, will display some 200 paintings from the Sanggar Melati Suci Gallery in Yogyakarta.

Coinciding with the exhibition, a painting competition will be held for elementary and junior high school students.

General manager of the Herwino gallery, Esther Ruslim, says Sanggar Melati Suci is a children's painting group with an international reputation. At least 60 paintings from the group have been exhibited in eleven cities in the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Oakland and Little Rock.

The exhibition, entitled "The Giant Who Swallowed the Moon: Children's Art from Java and Bali," is sponsored by American curator Joseph Fischer.(01)
