Indonesia is recorded as one of the world’s largest nickel producers, opening opportunities for the development of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. With total nickel ore reserves of 5.913 billion tonnes in 2024, Indonesia could become one of the world’s major producers.

This will support the automotive industry’s transition from fossil fuel-based to battery-based systems that are more environmentally friendly. Electric vehicles are not only suitable for urban areas but also for the entire country, including mining regions.

EVs could also serve as a major breakthrough to replace fossil fuel-powered fleets in mining areas. This would make mining operations more efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly. In addition to reducing dependence on fossil energy, the use of electric vehicles is said to lower long-term operational costs and carbon emissions.

The implementation of EVs in the mining sector can be a strategic step to enhance the industry’s competitiveness while preserving the environment. This move aligns with the government’s energy transition initiatives and the global push highlighting mining sustainability.

Although many mining industry players are now eyeing EVs as an alternative for operational vehicles, numerous challenges remain. The provision of charging infrastructure or SPKLU (charging stations), technical adjustments for mining conditions, and substantial initial financing are highlighted as challenges.

To explore the potential and address these challenges, CNBC Indonesia is holding the EV Transition in Mining Industry Outlook 2026 with the theme “The Future of EVs in Mining Industry: Between Efficiency and High Investment”. The event will take place on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, from 09:00 to 12:00 WIB at the St Regis Jakarta - Caroline Astor Ballroom.

This forum will feature strategic dialogues bringing together regulators, industry associations, mining business players, and stakeholders. The EV Transition in Mining Industry Outlook 2026 aims to review opportunities, challenges, and the industry’s readiness in adopting EV technology.

The forum will also encourage cross-stakeholder collaboration to strengthen the mining electrification ecosystem in Indonesia, towards a more competitive and sustainable industrial future.
