On March 17, 1995, I booked four Parahiangan Train tickets (executive class) for Bandung, West Java. The ticket cost Rp 23,000 plus Rp 1500 for a booking fee and was to be used on Sunday, March 19 for the 5.30 p.m. train from Gambir, Jakarta.
With the tickets bought, I was sure that our seats would be confirmed. This was not the case and we were very disappointed.
First, we were told that only three of us could sit in executive class, while one of us had to move to business class, which costs only Rp 12,000. They explained that the number of the executive coaches were reduced for that train ride.
Second, one of us had to move to business class (no seat guarantee) and the surcharge was not refunded.
Third, since he couldn't get a seat in business class he occupied a vacant seat thinking that if the owner of the seat came he would have to stand in the aisle for the journey to Bandung.
My question is, are the passengers entitled to seats if they book tickets in advance? I think they are. I am concerned over the way the railway company services the public, particularly concerning the right of every customer to fair treatment.
I sincerely hope the Director General of Land Transport will give due consideration to this matter, especially in this era openness.
