Brussels — The European Union has stated it has no interest in expanding the “Aspides” naval mission to the Strait of Hormuz, according to Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Following a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kallas said that the ministers had discussed various options for enhancing shipping protection in the region, focusing on de-escalation and freedom of navigation.

“We are pursuing a diplomatic solution for the Strait of Hormuz. This is not Europe’s war,” Kallas said.

“Aspides,” which means “shield” in Greek, is a maritime defence mission launched by the EU in February 2024 aimed at restoring and protecting freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf region.

Kallas’s statement came after United States President Donald Trump urged NATO allies to support efforts securing oil transportation in the strategic waterway.

To date, several European NATO member states, including Germany and Greece, have expressed reluctance to support the US proposal.
