European Union Meeting in Cyprus Postponed Following Iranian Drone Incident
Istanbul — Cypriot Greek authorities announced the postponement of a scheduled European Union meeting originally planned for Monday and Tuesday after an Iranian drone crashed at a British Royal Air Force base in the country.
The meeting of European Union European affairs ministers was to be held in the capital, Nicosia, as part of the Greek Cypriot presidency’s term holding the rotating presidency of the EU Council.
As of this report’s publication, no new meeting date had been announced.
Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides stated on Sunday (1 March) that the Iranian drone had crashed at the British Royal Air Force base located in Cyprus.
The incident occurred following a statement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirming that the United Kingdom had approved a US request to use British military bases in strikes described as a “defensive” measure.
These developments occurred amid heightened regional tensions following a major strike by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday (28 February) morning, which killed several senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran subsequently responded by launching a series of drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, US assets, and several countries in the Gulf region as a self-defence measure.
