Several airlines in Europe are reported to have cancelled numerous flight schedules due to the uncontrollable surge in aircraft fuel (avtur) prices. “So far, there is no fuel crisis (for aircraft in the European Union), and there are no indications of shortages in the near future,” stated European Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas on Wednesday (13/5/2026). “The real issue at the moment is the rise in fuel prices, which is causing many airlines to cancel certain trips that are no longer financially viable due to the increase in fuel costs,” he continued, as reported by Antara on Friday (15/5/2026). The statement was made during a presentation of the European initiative package “One journey, one ticket, full rights,” aimed at simplifying bookings for rail travel and tourism across Europe. These cuts apply to summer schedules until October, with the goal of curbing sharply rising fuel costs. The conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran is cited as one of the main triggers for the global energy price increase. The focus of these cancellations primarily targets short-haul routes. Routes from Frankfurt and Munich are the most affected, as they are deemed no longer profitable. These airlines are also undertaking major optimisations at their six main hubs in Europe. Although there are reductions in Germany, travellers still have other options. Lufthansa plans to expand services in other cities, for example, services in Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels will continue to be strengthened. This strategy is part of adjustments to keep their operations stable amid the challenges of avtur prices.
