Brussels (ANTARA) – The European Union is monitoring developments in Iran and the Middle Eastern region and has called upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint, according to a statement issued on behalf of the bloc by EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas on Sunday (1 March).

The statement called for maximum self-restraint, the protection of civilians, and full respect for international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law, whilst warning that the Middle East risks suffering substantial losses due to prolonged conflict.

The EU stated that it will continue to contribute to diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and seek long-term solutions to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The EU emphasised the importance of full Iranian cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and compliance with its legal obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.

Warning of the widening impact of the conflict, the statement noted that developments in Iran should not trigger escalation that could threaten the Middle East, Europe, and other regions, with unpredictable consequences, including in the economic sphere.

The statement also added that disruptions to important maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz should be avoided.

Kallas led an emergency video conference between EU foreign ministers on Sunday to discuss Iran and the rapidly evolving developments across the Middle East.
