Ethics Hearing for Brimob Officer Who Beat Child to Death in Maluku Held Today
The Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the Maluku Regional Police is set to hold an ethics hearing against First Class Private (Bripda) MS, a member of the Maluku Regional Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob), in connection with the assault that resulted in the death of AT (14), a student at the state Islamic secondary school (MTS Negeri) in Southeast Maluku.
The hearing on the alleged ethics violation is scheduled to take place at the Maluku Regional Police headquarters on Monday (23/2) afternoon.
“Monday, at 2pm, the ethics hearing will be held,” said Maluku Police Chief Inspector General Dadang Hartanto at the Maluku Regional Police Presisi Building on Sunday (22/2) afternoon.
However, he did not elaborate on the composition of the Police Code of Ethics Commission panel that will preside over the hearing.
He said Bripda MS would be subject to dismissal and dishonourable discharge (PTDH).
The dismissal is purely because Bripda MS’s actions cannot be tolerated, and the dismissal represents a form of legal accountability for all personnel, including Bripda MS.
“There is no pressure from National Police Headquarters. We recognise that such actions cannot be tolerated, as I have directed from the outset,” he said.
He explained that the ethics hearing was scheduled for Monday afternoon as they were still waiting for the victim’s elder sibling, identified as KT (15), and the victim’s father, Rijik Fikri Tawakal, who were travelling from Vitditan Village, North Bula Subdistrict, Tual City. Both will serve as witnesses in the ethics hearing.
“So, God willing, we have set the hearing for tomorrow as we are waiting for the victim’s family, since the flight from Tual departs at 11am and arrives in Ambon at approximately noon,” he said.
The ethics hearing for Bripda MS will be held as an open session at the Maluku Regional Police headquarters and will be broadcast via live streaming for the victim’s family in their home village to watch.
Meanwhile, the criminal proceedings against Bripda MS will be decided at the Tual City Police, as they have already conducted a number of witness examinations.
“I have coordinated with the High Prosecutor’s Office and the Deputy High Prosecutor, and at the lower level there has been coordination with prosecutors regarding case file preparation to ensure it proceeds quickly. I have directed the investigators below, at the district police level, to oversee the case file preparation process. God willing, the target is to hand it over to the public prosecutor by Tuesday or Wednesday, at which point it will be reviewed based on the applicable charges, and after that we hope for swift action,” he explained.
The Tual City Police have named Brimob Company 1, Battalion C Pelopor member Bripda MS as a suspect following the assault on AT (14), a student at MTS Negeri Southeast Maluku, which resulted in the victim’s death.
Bripda MS was immediately placed in the Tual City Police detention facility following a case review on Friday (20/2) evening.
Tual City Police Chief Senior Commissioner Whansi Des Asmoro said a number of items of evidence had been secured, including a tactical helmet, the victim’s motorcycle, the victim’s keys, and equipment attached to the helmet.
“We have secured Bripda MS’s tactical helmet, two motorcycles, the victim’s keys, and other equipment from the helmet,” he said on Saturday (21/2).
