Estrada set to return to jail
MANILA (AP): Ousted President Joseph Estrada is well enough to
leave a military hospital and return to his remote detention
cell, his doctors told an anti-graft court on Wednesday.
The report by Dr. Salvador Flores said Estrada suffers several
ailments but they are not worsening and present "no compelling
reasons to institute additional treatment."
The court ruled last week that Estrada, arrested April 25 on
accusations of massive corruption, must leave the hospital and
return to a special detention center south of Manila as soon as
he is fit to do so.
Police said they plan to transfer Estrada back to the center
on June 19, the day after he is to make an initial court
appearance.
But Estrada lawyer Rene Saguisag said he will ask the court to
allow Estrada to be detained throughout his upcoming trial at
police headquarters in Manila.
