Estonia urges Indonesia to strengthen cooperation in maritime technology sector
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Estonia regards Indonesia as an important partner in expanding its market in the technology and maritime sectors and is ready to support Indonesia in accelerating digitalisation in the national shipping sector.
This was conveyed by Estonian Infrastructure Minister Kuldar Leis, who stated that his country sees strong potential for strengthening collaboration with Indonesia in that sector, given that both nations prioritise the sea as one of their leading national economic sectors.
“Indonesia, as one of the world’s largest maritime nations, and Estonia, as a pioneer in the digital sector, can complement each other in meaningful ways,” said Minister Leis in his speech at the Estonian Maritime Industry Business Mission to Indonesia event in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He explained that Estonia is a digitally oriented country that has adopted various digital technologies in its maritime sector, such as the development of smart ports, energy optimisation systems, and automated shipping traffic planning.
Kuldar Leis also highlighted the strength of Estonia’s maritime development cluster ecosystem, comprising companies, research institutions, the business sector, and government, which enables the realisation of digital innovations in practical implementation.
With that foundation, Estonia is confident in offering integrated and proportionally scaled digital and maritime technology sophistication for adoption by its partners in Indonesia, said the Estonian Infrastructure Minister.
In agreement, the Estonian Ambassador to Indonesia, Veikko Kala, stated that his country offers flexible and efficient solutions for Indonesia in adopting green maritime technology.
“We see very strong potential between Indonesia and Estonia in efforts to transition to green shipping,” said Ambassador Kala.
According to him, collaboration opportunities in open port technology with Indonesia include decarbonisation technology and port energy solutions.
New cooperation opportunities are expanding amid Estonia’s active efforts to develop shipping corridors and “retrofit” capabilities (adopting new technology into old systems) on ships, said the Estonian Ambassador.
Ambassador Kala also affirmed that with the maritime sector contributing up to 5 percent to the national gross domestic product (GDP), Estonia will continue to drive the latest technological innovations for green shipping, which in the future can be offered to partner countries, including Indonesia.
