Escaping Death: The Tale of ABK Fandi Ramadhan Involved in a Two-Tonne Drug Syndicate
Fandi Ramadhan (25), a novice ABK from Medan, rose to national prominence in 2026 after being implicated in what authorities described as the largest drug-smuggling case in Indonesian waters. A graduate of Politeknik Pelayaran Malahayati Aceh in 2022, Fandi is the eldest of six and had hoped to lift his family out of debt, the family home having been mortgaged to fund his education. In May 2025, Fandi went to Thailand to work. He was initially promised a job aboard the cargo vessel MP North Star but was instead placed on the tanker Sea Dragon Terawa. Within days of joining, the vessel met a Myanmar fishing boat at sea to transfer 67 boxes of contraband. Although Fandi expressed suspicion and questioned the captain, he lacked the authority to refuse orders, and the vessel was later intercepted by authorities in the waters around the Riau Islands with nearly two tonnes of methamphetamine as evidence. On 5 March 2026, the Batam District Court handed down a five-year prison sentence, described by many as a legal breakthrough. The judge highlighted several crucial points: ABK should understand their rights and remain wary of illegal recruitment agents. The use of informal recruitment channels and the absence of official documents (such as an validated Seaman Book) have often served as entry points for international drug syndicates to exploit cheap labour unaware of the risks. As of March 2026, Fandi Ramadhan had been convicted of involvement in a drug conspiracy. In addition to Fandi, five other defendants, including the ship’s captain Hasiholan Samosir and two Thai nationals, faced charges. His family welcomed the verdict as Fandi escaped the death penalty, though his legal team may pursue further legal avenues. The Batam District Court did not impose the death penalty on ABK Fandi Ramadhan of Sea Dragon Terawa in the two-tonne drug-trafficking case. The case has dominated Indonesian news at the start of 2026. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty, but the court sentenced Fandi to five years in prison. Although he avoided the death penalty, Fandi remains to respond to the five-year term.
