Escalating War: Iran Reveals Major Secret of FBI Boss

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Cyber attacks linked to Iran are heating up amid the conflict with America and Israel. This time, the main target is FBI Director Kash Patel, whose personal email was reportedly hacked and disseminated to the public.

The hacking group known as Handala Hack Team claims to have breached Patel’s personal email account and released hundreds of data items, including personal photos showing his daily activities. The group states that Patel is now on their list of “successful victims.”

The FBI has confirmed the hacking attempt. However, authorities emphasise that the leaked data is outdated and does not include sensitive government information. FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson stated that mitigation steps have been taken to curb further potential risks.

“We have taken all necessary steps to mitigate the potential risks associated with this activity, and we add that the data involved is historical and does not include government information,” Williamson said, quoted from Reuters, on Monday (30/3/2026).

This action is believed to be part of Iran’s pressure strategy against the United States. According to cybersecurity analysts, such attacks aim not only to steal data but also to humiliate public officials and create a sense of vulnerability at the government elite level.

The Handala group itself is said to be linked to Iran’s cyber intelligence unit, although they claim to be vigilante hackers supporting Palestine.

In recent weeks, they have also claimed responsibility for attacks on health company Stryker and the leaking of employee data from defence company Lockheed Martin.

In addition to Patel’s photos, the hackers published samples of more than 300 emails, which appear to contain a mix of personal and work correspondence from the period 2010 to 2019.

Gil Messing, chief of staff at Israeli cybersecurity firm Check Point, said the hacking and data leak operation against Patel is part of Iran’s strategy to humiliate US officials and make them feel vulnerable. According to him, Iran is currently using every means at its disposal.

Attacks on senior officials’ personal emails are not new. Hackers previously breached John Podesta’s personal Gmail account, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, ahead of the 2016 election and published the data via WikiLeaks.

In 2015, teenage hackers also successfully breached the personal AOL account of then-CIA Director John Brennan and leaked US intelligence officials’ data.
