Erwin in Paris for rapid chess

JAKARTA (JP): Chess whiz kid Erwin Yulianto will represent
Indonesia at the Second Disneyworld Rapid Chess Championships
scheduled from Dec. 15 to Dec. 18 in Paris.

Erwin, 14, has won the junior national chess championship
title four times in a row. He won the title for the first time in
1992 in Jakarta and has successfully defended it ever since. This
year he retained the title in the similar championship in
Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, last July.

Erwin, son of a watch repairer, has been studying with the
Jakarta-based Enerpac chess school on a scholarship for one year.
In the championships which is sponsored by Paris Disneyland,
Erwin will take part in the boy's 14 and under event.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Chess Association will also send
five male and four female chess players to the Asian Team Chess
Championship in Singapore, scheduled for Dec. 14 to Dec. 23.

The five are Grand Master Edhi Handoko, Awam Wahono, Cecep
Kosasih, Master International Cerdas Barus and MI Nasib Ginting.
Their female teammates are MI Maria Ratna Lucia, MI Upi Damayana
Tamin, Trihoni Nalesti Dewi and MI Lisa K. Lumondong.

Some countries from the former Soviet republic, now regarded
as part of Asia, will take part in the Singapore championship for
the first time. (arf)
