Jakarta — Indonesia’s Environmental Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has instructed terminal operators in Jakarta to improve waste management within three months and cease disposing of waste at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility (TPST).

Following an inspection of Kampung Rambutan Terminal in East Jakarta on Tuesday, Minister Nurofiq stated that with a daily waste generation of 15 tonnes, the terminal should already be equipped with a materials recovery facility to reduce waste volumes.

“We will provide direct guidance on what needs to be prepared at Kampung Rambutan, and we will request, as with other facilities, that it be completed within three months given the waste emergency in Jakarta,” said Environmental Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.

The directive has been implemented as terminals in Jakarta face potential waste surges during this year’s Lebaran exodus and return period, yet the majority continue to send waste to Bantargebang. Environmental Ministry data shows an average of 8,000 tonnes of waste per day are sent to Bantargebang.

One approach to reducing waste volumes ending up at Bantargebang involves ensuring area managers, including those operating terminals, markets, and shopping centres, implement independent waste management systems.

The Environmental Ministry has ordered Bantargebang to halt open dumping practices, which involve stacking waste without treatment. A waste landslide at Bantargebang in early March 2026 resulted in seven fatalities.

“We are currently developing scenarios with Jakarta’s special region authorities to reduce waste through area managers,” said Environmental Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
