Jakarta - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who also heads the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), has urged traditional markets to become Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful (ASRI) to support sustainable grassroots economics, including managing waste independently.

According to a statement confirmed from Jakarta on Wednesday, Environment Minister Hanif, alongside Trade Minister Budi Santoso, conducted a cleanliness drive at Kramat Jati Market in Jakarta as part of implementing the ASRI Movement championed by President Prabowo Subianto.

“To date, we have issued administrative enforcement sanctions to nearly all markets in Jakarta to manage their own waste. Traditional markets are a symbol of culture, serving as a gathering place for people of various backgrounds, so market cleanliness should reflect the cultural values of each community,” explained Environment Minister Hanif Faisol.

Data from the 2025 waste management evaluation shows that of approximately 8,700 tons of daily waste generated in Jakarta, only 1,700 tons, or 22.35 per cent, is properly managed. This demonstrates high dependency on downstream management and the necessity for systemic reform from the source, including at grassroots economic centres.

Beyond environmental considerations, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol emphasised that the cleanliness and management of traditional markets will be a primary driver of grassroots economics.

“Clean, well-managed ASRI markets will increase trust among traders and consumers, whilst strengthening local economic competitiveness,” said Minister Hanif.

Managing waste at source, including in traditional markets through waste segregation, will foster a clean culture whilst supporting grassroots economic sustainability, thereby creating a just, prosperous society living in harmony with the environment.

Trade Minister Budi Santoso stated that the market cleanliness drive is one way to improve the health and comfort of both traders and consumers.

“When markets are clean and healthy, more people come to shop,” said Trade Minister Budi.
